Meet Your Eco Council Members

The Firs has recently started a new Eco Council. This is made up of representatives from all KS1 and KS2 classes.

The Firs Eco Council

The Firs Eco Council

The Eco Council has developed a code that all of us at the school will work hard to adopt.

The Firs Eco Code

  • We recycle
  • We try to reuse things
  • We care for wildlife
  • We do not litter
  • We do not waste resources
  • We try to use cars less
  • We compost

Our Eco councillors are responsible for encouraging the school to follow this code. They check lights are turned off, doors are shut and our litter is carefully disposed of. They have also taken responsibility for our new composting system. Every day members of the council collect vegetable and fruit waste from the dining room and the kitchen for our composting bins. Mr Robson and Mr Cartlidge are looking forward to digging the compost into our flower beds!

Rednose Day Raises Loads – Total updated!

Congratulations to our pupils and staff who have managed to raise in excess of £880 for this years Comic Relief appeal. This was done by a combination of selling red noses and a sponsored spell for all classes. The children really got into the spirit of the day with all sorts of comic outfits with a red theme and Mrs Cook baked a special rednose cake.

Top Infants visit the Salt Museum

We visited the salt museum in Northwich because they do a variety of very interesting workshops. We went to learn more about toys from the past. There were two sessions, one about toys from 100 years ago, Victorian toys, and one about Tudor toys, about 500 years ago. Our guides were dressed in period costumes. We were able to play with many toys including hobby horses, yoyos, jacobs ladders, marbles and dolls. We learned about how children played both rich and poor. Nowadays many of our toys are made from plastic but many years ago toys were made from natural materials.

It was a wonderful day – we want to go back again!

J3 visit to the Annual Birkenhead Science Fair 2009

On Friday (6th March) the pupils of J3 went to the Birkenhead Science Fair. It was fantastic, as always. We visited the animal corner, which gets bigger every year and included snakes, birds of prey, stick insects, spiders (big hairy ones), reptiles, an African hedgehog and many more.

Chemistry is fun

Chemistry is fun

We saw explosions – lots of bangs and flashes for the boys, rode on a leaf-blower hovercraft, made our own silly putty, stood on “solid” cornflour (or was it liquid?), turned 2p coins silver or gold, saw hovercrafts made from CDs, crushed a cherry tomato frozen in dry ice, watched a brittle frozen flower crumble to powder, saw plumes of toilet paper fly across the hall, crushed empty beer cans without squeezing them, wore safety goggles whenever needed, saw the cola and mentos experiment for ourselves… and we were still back in time for lunch.

Can I get one of these to go to school on?

We can’t wait to go back for science workshops and would like to thank everyone at Birkenhead School for a very warm welcome and a brilliantly organised event and
our two parent helpers, Mrs Carty and Mrs Wood, for their sterling work.

Snowdon Sponsored Challenge – updated!

Ever thought about biking up Snowdon? We are putting together a men’s event to raise money for charity and have some fun. The weekend will be the 25-26 April 2009. The full weekend itinerary is firming up and will comprise of taking the train from Chester to Bangor 1st thing Saturday. We will then form 2 groups. The 1st will make their way to the Snowdon Ranger YHA via the back roads and cycle paths of Snowdonia. The 2nd will make their way to the foot of Snowdon, cycle up the Railway bridle path and then down to the Snowdon Ranger YHA. We will then overnight at the YHA and after a full english breakfast in the morning all return to Bangor on the Sunday in a circular route via the Lon Eifion Cycleway. Total route is something like 45miles but comprises of a fair few ups and downs! Most of the area is covered in the map here.

The charities to be supported is Claire House Hospice or the Light Project. Both are local charities doing great work for young people. Places are limited at the YHA so if you want to join us please contact Tim Longman via the school email or call in the office. There is also a group which intends to cycle up Snowdon but then return via the same route and back to Chester.

Some of the route for the weekend!
