Ultimate Plum Pudding and Delicious Chocolate Pudding

Many thanks indeed to all the children for their wonderful response to the Christmas Pudding Label Competition.  The high standard and imaginative drawings made the selection of the two winners an extremely difficult task.  Well done to everyone who took the time and effort to enter and congratulations to the two winners who will receive a £10 book token. They are Harriet Fisher of  J4 and Freya Walsh of MIR. Their winning entries are below.

The delicious and luxurious Christmas Pudding is packed with vine fruits soaked in brandy and sherry, cherries, apricots, stem ginger, walnuts and almonds.  This year we also have a sumptuous Chocolate Pudding made from melted Belgian chocolate, dark chocolate chips and fine French cocoa powder enhanced with brandy and crème de cacao.  These puddings are used by top chefs and sold as prestigious private labels throughout the country.  The puddings are decorated with a beautiful design drawn by pupils of The Firs School, making this a unique and charming gift idea, as well as a delicious festive treat for all of the family and your friends (including vegetarians).  Purchasing your Christmas puddings through the school means EVERY child benefits – not just our lucky competition winners – as every penny made on the sale of each pudding goes directly to school funds.  So remember, the more you order, the more all the pupils benefit.  Make up those Christmas presents lists today and see how many people would love to receive such a delightful treat – and the price has not increased from last year!

PLEASE RETURN YOUR ORDER AND PAYMENT TO YOUR CHILD’S CLASS TEACHER – CLOSING DATE FOR ORDERS IS MONDAY 3rd November 2008

Half term letter from our Head Teacher.

Dear Parents

We have had another enjoyable and busy half term!

Our sports teams have been in action playing football, netball and hockey against a variety of schools including Ellesmere College, Merton House, The White House and West House School with excellent results. Thank you to Mr Youldon-Hockey and especially Mrs Cheshire who always gives so generously of her time.

Infants have enjoyed their High School Musical dance club and I’m sure that the Top Infants are looking forward to Infant Football Club which begins on Monday 3 November.

Pupils in J3 had a great day out at Chester cathedral being pilgrims for a day and children from Reception to Top Infants have enjoyed visits to the cinema as part of their personal, health, social and citizenship curriculum.

Thank you for joining ‘Park ‘n’ Stride’ so enthusiastically! Using St Columba’s car park and walking to school, even once or twice a week has a significant impact on the congestion around school, especially at the end of the day! Thank you too to those parents who are helping to give out stickers at the car park. More volunteers are always welcome – please let the office know.

We enjoyed a very successful Open Morning, our J4 and J3 children who acted as guides did a wonderful job and were complimented by our many visitors! May I remind you that if you have a child in Kindergarten and you would like to increase the number of days they come in, please let us know as soon as possible. If you have a child in another nursery or playgroup and want them to join The Firs in Reception in September 2009 they need to be on our registration list!

The FSDF have been in action organising the ‘Design a Christmas pudding label’ competition, collecting orders, helping with Open Morning and our New Parents social evening and holding a “nearly new” uniform sale. Thank you to all the FSDF for their help, hard work and support. If you would like to help with any FSDF events please contact
Mrs Patton, via J1YH.

Forthcoming FSDF events to put in your diary now are the Christmas Fair which will be held in school on Thursday 27 November and The Firs Charity Ball which will be held at The Hoole Hall Hotel on Saturday 16 May 2009. The Hoole Hall Hotel has recently undergone a full refurbishment, has a new menu and ample parking and we are looking forward to a fun filled evening!

Finally, on behalf of everyone at The Firs, may I wish you a very happy half term.

Yours sincerely

Mrs M A Denton

J2 Robinwood Trip – 11-13 May 2009

Dear Parents

TRIP TO ROBINWOOD ACTIVITY CENTRE, DOBROYD CASTLE, TODMORDEN, LANCASHIRE, 11–13 May 2009

For the past few years our J2 class has visited Robinwood in Cumbria. This year the trip will be to the new Robinwood centre in Dobroyd Castle, Lancashire. Dobroyd Castle will offer all the activities performed in Cumbria but is closer to Chester thus reducing journey time and cost of transport. Please see the accompanying leaflet and brochure for more information on the Robinwood experience.

There will be a short meeting to discuss the trip to Robinwood at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday 19th November in the school hall. Children who are interested in going on the trip may come with you.

The approximate cost of the trip will be £230.00, and if you wish your child to participate, please complete the slip below and return it to the school office, together with a deposit of £30.00 by Monday 3rd November.

Please also indicate whether or not you can attend the meeting.

Yours sincerely

Mrs M Denton

Firs photos from yesteryear

Does anyone know the identity of the  former Firs pupils in this photo from the 1960’s or possibly 70’s?

Mrs F Longman, founder of the school is at the back 4th from the left. A larger version of the picture can be seen here.

Park ‘n’ Stride is back!

Park ‘n’ stride will be back on Monday 14th. We’ve produced a great new leaflet to collect stickers and this time some parents will be helping us. Thank-you to all of you who have carried on walking since summer and see you at St Columba’s car park in the future!

Harvest Service at St. Columba’s Thursday 23rd Oct

Dear Parents

Our Harvest service will take place on Thursday 23rd October at 2.15 p.m. at St. Columba’s church, Newton, and you are warmly invited to join us.

Harvest gifts of dried and tinned foods will be donated to Save the Family. Save the Family is a local charity which supports homeless families. The Firs School supports a cottage at Plas Bellin, a community which receives homeless families and offers training and support. If you would like further information about Save the Family please look on their website, www.savethefamily.uk.com.

Gifts may be brought to school on the morning of the service and should be left in the pottery room.

Children will not need their school bags on Thursday 23rd October and if they usually bring a packed lunch please send this in disposable containers.

As the service marks the end of this half term we would ask that children are collected from church at the end of the service approximately 3.15 p.m.

The only children that we can bring back to school are those who usually go to after school care. After school care will finish at the usual time.

Fish Pond for Open Morning

We decided that it was about time to get the pond area in action again and are now racing against time to get the pond redeveloped in time for the open morning. Tim, Mike, Sam and Ant from TOPS are now working flat out to install a new liner, landscape the area and add a waterfall so the water can be aerated for fish! We’ll then be able to have pond skimming again and the children will be able to take turns to do fish feeding!
