A Tudor Christmas Feast for J3

On Tuesday 27th November J3 spent a wonderful day at the Salt Museum in Northwich, learning about how the Tudors celebrated Christmas.

They kept us very busy and highly entertained. First we were introduced to Master Tom, the head servant and Sergeant John of the Watch.

After a few minutes we heard singing and a ragged man appeared at the door. It was Rufty, the beggar. He was allowed to stay for the twelve days of Christmas. We all helped to set the table for the Christmas Feast and sang a special song when the Boar’s Head was carried in.

Sergeant John told us all about the weapons and taught us single stick fighting and some people practised firing the canon! The barber surgeon (in blood-stained apron) had to help an injured man.

Some people dressed up as mummers and performed a play for the rest of us. Finally we all learned to play Tudor instruments and finished off with Tudor dancing in a circle. We had a wonderful time………. You really should try it.

Jubilee Gates are Officially Opened

The Lord Mayor of Chester Jim Latham and his wife, Hilary, came to the Firs School this afternoon in order to officially open our new 60th Jubilee gates. The whole school came to greet him along with parents from the FSDF who raised money towards the gates and some of the contractors who worked on it. After the mayor opened the gates he had a brief tour of the school with Mrs Denton before attending a small reception featuring a special Gates cake, baked and decorated by Mrs Smith, one of our parents.

Willow Sculptures Day

On October 17th Mrs Gregson led our very first willow workshop. Arriving at the school with bunches of willow she enthused our junior children in the art of willow sculpting. In groups of 8 the juniors applied their new found skills to create a beautiful willow dragon. This lasting piece of art work is a tribute to former teacher Mrs Davies who retired in July after 39 years of dedicated service. The dragon has found a new home in our Secret Garden opened in July.

More of Mrs Gregson’s work can be seen in the forthcoming exhibition at Moreton Hall, Oswestry, from 8th-10th November or by visiting www.carolinegregson.com
